L’WREN SCOTT RIP - Styling Victoria’s Secrets’ shoot with Sante’D’Orazio circa 1997.

Mildred Brignoni- Assistant Stylist

It’s not easy nor is it fair to criticize another artist’s choices even when it comes to their early death.  L’Wren Scott may have been riddled with controversy.  In the 1990’s, I - a young stylist from Los Angeles California  came to work for L’Wren Scott several times for her very important styling jobs.

One early Fall Morning, a town car whipped around to my apartment to pick me up before the break of dawn.  I had gotten the call very late the night before and I quit everything I had originally planned on working on just to join the famous stylist L’Wren and become part of the inner circle of the fashion industry and its prestigeous lifestyles rich and famous.

I was so excited I jumped up with a pep in my step…maybe too super pepping for a 5AM call time.  The beautiful brunette in the back seat wore dark shades and as I turned around and started asking a bunch of questions that went unanswered I got the feeling, L’Wren (my boss for the shoots ) was unamused.  I was eager, hungry to work and just plain ol happy to be invited to be working with Super Models Claudia Shiffer.  I was no dummy however, not only was I behaved after I realized that i was not there to be her Best Friend but to do a job, I also planned on doing a lot with the rate I negotiated.  After all, it was the nineties and back then, even stylist’s assistants got paid big bucks.  Who knows why she was cold, maybe she was annoyed at the early morning, or that I had insisted on negotiating a rate higher than they were willing to pay.  To my credit, it was well passed eleven o’clock pm when I got a call to assist her last minute.  And, as I had already been working on a show-which I took the time to painfully explain to them I was going to replace myself and having to tell them I had doubled up on jobs ( not entirely fair to the first show- but would you blame me ?), I knew I was going to work my ass off for her. My take on it was, L’Wren was lucky to find someone last minute that could run circles around anybody else she would have found and as I was that bold to ask for double the amount they initially offered, I felt she may have been miffed or equally respected me for it…who knows.  So - off we went the next morning down the Long Island Tunnel in NYC….I didn’t even know where we were headed…I kept seeing trees and it seemed we drove over 2 hours to finally arrive a the most majestic and most beautiful mansion I had ever seen.  Because I am from LA, lets get real, even though I may not have ever grown up with a silver spoon, nor would lots of other people, the chances of having very wealthy friends is normal, thusly, I had been to many mansions prior to this experience.  So - I learned, as we arrived at one of the most iconic mansions in East Hampton’s NY, and we were shooting Claudia Shiffer.  Our super model and my boss was not to be disturbed until we were ready.  That went on for a few days until L’Wren warmed up to me and started trusting me into the secured off room and running around to exclusively work with Helena Christianson.

The rest was more than any experience I could ever share.  One has to work with a lot of high expectations and keep a smile and be nice to everyone at all times.  In the fashion industry, if you are spoken to in a manner you weren’t brought up with learning because it was considered rude or bad manners, one needs to deal with it!…  After all, you are the less than 1% of the world that gets to do exactly what everybody else wishes they had a chance to practice in their careers.  Its a tough business. I was toughy…no doubt.  But I also found the time we worked together a huge learning experience as she was sought after with 10 jobs at a time while hiring more than 3-4 assistants per job. So naturally, Everyone’s temper is always tested. Here is where things get tricky….I won’t go into many details except to say that I did get paid handsomely- but I earned every penny I worked for.  Moreover, I own the fact that at the time I was a naive and young woman that had yet, at that time, to have first hand experience in working with the best of the best in the business. Hence, my opinion’s here of working with her may not matter to anyone, nor should they mean much because it was a limited time in my own life. I have become humbled and cherish my memories of her and of the work we did to help her succeed.  And, its all about a very respected woman that started from humble beginnings to create breath taking art and fashion.  She may not have become a house hold name such as ARMANI, but ARMANI sure knew who was she was.

After more than six years after that Victoria’s Secrets shoot and when I realized I was done with styling and back living in LA, I ran into L’Wren Scott at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on Los Feliz Blvd.  We chatted for a long while, I learned that she too had decided to start a fashion line and was happy to have reconnected.  We exchanged numbers, phoned a few times, alas I missed placed her tele.  Over the last ten years, I moved into Branded Entertainment around Fashion and throughout social media.  I missed her enough that I went to Barney’s here on Madison Avenue just to go see her collection.  Sadly, I learned this past Monday she was found dead.  I am saddened and grief stricken.  First because she was such a force of fashion taste makers and was truly a bad ass.  Secondly because she was’t anyone but herself.  Its a shame that people on social media want to make a spectacle of her name that never even knew her.  Granted, I wasn’t her BFF, nor was in her inner circle, but I truly respected her.  She left a lasting impression on the world through her work.  As you can see above, I dug these out of my styling archives to share with the world, my time working with a woman’s masterpieces- her ability to connect style and an uncanny way of making lingerie look classic.

I will miss you L’Wren and thank you for teaching me never forget the details.
